Super Ed

School Learning Laboratory

What is the SuperEd School Learning Laboratory?

The School Learning Laboratory (SLL) is a research and development project to develop a collaborative model for providing external services to schools. SLL is producing a toolkit of products and processes to: a) help schools select, use, and assess external services; b) produce school staffs who know how to effect successful school change projects; and c) result in school innovations that directly impact students, teachers and schools.

Who's involved?

SuperEd is a network of statewide non-profit organizations that serve Maine schools. SuperEd has been awarded a three-year research and development grant from the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust to support SLL. The SLL staff includes a Project Director and two Facilitators. SLL works in collaboration with the Western Maine Partnership (WMP) and eight sites participated in the project:

  • Kingfield Elementary School (SAD#58).
  • Andover, Crescent Park, and Woodstock Elementary Schools (SAD#44).
  • Mt. Vernon Elementary School (Union #42).
  • Livermore Falls Middle School (SAD #36).
  • Governor James B. Longley Elementary School (Lewiston).
  • Waterford Elementary School (SAD #17)
  • West Paris Elementary School (SAD #17)
  • Lincoln Elementary School (Augusta)

How does it work?

SLL involves WMP schools and SuperEd members. Participating schools receive customized facilitation and guidance from SLL facilitators, and school staff members acquire skills, processes and strategies to support purposeful change. SuperEd members participate in SLL processes and provide services to schools as negotiated. SLL is creating a model that can be replicated and sustained beyond the life of this grant.

When does it happen?

The SLL is taking place between 2003-2006. During the first phase, SLL staff is designing, piloting, and documenting the model with 2 schools. During the second phase staff continues the development, reviews and refines the model and uses it with up to 3 additional schools. In the final phase, the model will be replicated with 3 new schools and disseminated. Throughout the project, efforts are made to identify sustainable elements and sources of additional support.
