  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 2001 Northeast Affiliate ASCD Conference. 124 Maine educators attended.

  • Maine ASCD receives Outstanding Affiliate Journal 2002 Affiliate Publication Award, for the 2001 Journal of Maine Education. This is the twelfth time the Journal has been so awarded.

  • Maine ASCD successful partnered with the Rural Schools Partnership to hold a Dimensions of Learning workshop in Bangor. In September, we successfully partnered with the Windham School Department of host an Evening with Roland Barth.

  • Maine ASCD held successful Fall, Winter and Spring conferences. Fall Conference was Grading with Bea McGarvey, Winter Conference was Brain-based learning with Marilee Sprenger, and the Spring Conference was Brain-based learning with Eric Jensen.

  • Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that received over 38,000 hits in the last 10 months, an average of 128 hits per day

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 32 days of professional development activities around the state.

  • In partnership with MSAD 11 in Gardiner, Maine ASCD offered its first distance learning activities in the form of five on-line professional development workshops dealing with the use of technology in the classroom.

  • In partnership with the Portland Public Schools, the Westbrook School Department and the Augusta School Department, Maine ASCD offered the first teacher induction program for newly hired teachers called “Getting Off to A Great Start.”

  • Maine ASCD was the recipient of a $2,000 ASCD Influence Grant that has been used to gather statewide data on educator issues and concerns.

  • As part of the work begun at the fall retreat the Board has worked on creating new Core Values and Beliefs, as well as a fresh Vision statement and bold Mission statement

  • Following amendments in the Maine ASCD Constitution and By-Laws at the last Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors was expanded to 16 members (elected or appointed).

  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 6th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference in Boston on Dec 5-6-7, 2002. 107 Maine educators attended.

  • The award winning Journal of Maine Education (Vol XIX) was published with the theme “Standards-Based Learning After Columbine and 9-11: How Can Schools Make Room for the Three C's”.

  • The Development Committee has continued fundraising activities through direct mail appeals to the membership.

  • Maine ASCD held successful Fall, Winter and Spring conferences. Fall Conference was held in two locations (Portland and Bangor) with Bea McGarvey offering advanced training in Grading and Reporting, Winter Conference was with Robin Fogarty, and the Spring Conference was Differentiated Instruction with Carol Ann Tomlinson.

  • Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that received over 35,000 hits in the last 12 months, an average of 282 hits per day

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 14 days of professional development activities around the state.

  • Maine ASCD participated in a Legislative Roundup in the Hall of Flags at the State House in Augusta on February 26, 2003

  • Maine ASCD has continued building networks with other groups and organizations in Maine. This past year we assisted in the further development of a collaborative of other educational non-profit organizations known collectively as “SuperEd.” In addition to a website www.supered.org which links to each of the participating organizations.

  • The Board held two mini-retreats this year. One last summer, which was held at the home of Mary Arno, was facilitated by Suzi Benoit. The second was held at Larry Littlefield’s home and was facilitated by Larry Littlefield. The focus was on Board development and strengthening the association.

  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 7th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference in Boston Dec 4-5-6, 2003 with approximately 450 attendees including 158 from Maine. Maine ASCD continues to serve as the fiscal agent for this conference as well as providing operational support. Speakers this year included, Andy Hargreaves, Rick & Becky DuFour, Lynn Erickson, Alan November, and Connie Prevatte. As a new feature at NEAC, distance learning courses were offered in partnership with TeachStream/Video Journal of Education.

  • The award winning Journal of Maine Education (Vol XX) was published with the theme “Challenging the Norms: Opening Education to New Ideas.” One comprehensive issue of Maine ASCD News.

  • The Development Committee has continued fundraising activities through direct mail appeals to the membership.

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 12 days of professional development activities around the state (down from 14 days last year) with the following presenters: Arthur Costa, Bea McGarvey, Gayle Gregory, Edie Holcomb and Thomas Guskey.

  • Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that received many hits. The website was completely redesigned during the summer of 2003 and a new web hosting company hired. As a result, we do not have complete visitor or “hit” data for the last 12 months. Extrapolated data shows that the Maine ASCD site has had over 52,700 hits since last July with over 14,300 total visitors.

  • Maine ASCD cultivated two new professional development services this year. The first was in the form of the Showcasing Schools Committee visitations which first began in spring 2003 with a visit to Poland Regional HS. This activity involved the identification of Maine schools who are engaged in exemplary teaching/learning programs. In all, five Maine schools hosted our visitors this year including: Montello Elementary in Lewiston, the Sanford Elementary schools, Shapleigh Middle School in Kittery, Noble HS in Berwick, and King Middle School in Portland. The second new professional development initiative was the creation of two Study Groups. The first group, facilitated by Marcia Gendron dealt with issues of leadership and was co-sponsored by the Cumberland County AARC-B Group. The second Study Group was facilitated by Jan Staples on Differentiated Instruction and was held at the Cricket Hunt School in Freeport.

  • Executive Director, John Brandt participated in the first-ever ASCD “Day on the Hill” and made visits to the Washington, DC offices of Representative Tom Allen and Senator Susan Collins. The Day on the Hill event was part of the annual ASCD Affiliate Leadership Conference held on April 22, 2004.

  • Maine ASCD has continued building networks with other groups and organizations in Maine. This past year we continued our collaboration with other educational non-profit organizations known collectively as “SuperEd.” As part of a grant that was received by the SuperEd collaborative, Maine ASCD was invited to meet with two schools in western Maine to discuss needs and professional development opportunities.

  • Last May, Maine ASCD welcomed Darlene Markham as our new bookkeeper. Darlene lives in Phippsburg with her husband Terry. Darlene replaced Ellen Parker who had been bookkeeper for the past five years.

  • A number of networking opportunities have been successful this past year including partnerships with: Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), University of New England, Measured Progress, Portland School Department, Lewiston School Department, Kittery School Department, Cricket Hunt School, Bangor School Department, Maine School Administrative District # 60, Sanford School Department, Maine School Administrative District # 75, and the Maine Department of Education.

  • The Board again held two mini-retreats this year, one last summer which was held on the campus of the University of New England and the second held at Maple Hill Farm Inn.

  • The Maine ASCD Board welcomed two new members this year, Patrick Manuel and Betsy Wandishin and welcomed back Deb Baker. Deputy Commissioner of Education Patrick Phillips has continued on the Board of Directors serving as the liaison to the Department of Education. Chris Chamberlain stepped down as Vice President in January and Carol Marcotte has been appointed in her place. Mary Arno stepped down in April and Deborah Baker has been appointed to fulfill this term.

  • Maine ASCD published Volume XXI of the Journal of Maine Education with the theme “Politics in Education: Problems, Paradoxes, and Possibilities.” This year the Maine ASCD News has been published on-line for the first time. Two issues have been published this year with hope of a third this spring.

  • Maine ASCD has created a new level of membership – Student Member which has reduced membership rates and allows these members to attend Maine ASCD events for half price. Student Membership information was distributed to colleges and universities across the state this year. The level of Retired Member has been revised and expanded to include more members who are entering this stage in their career. The Retired Member rate is discounted and we hope many of our current members take advantage of this and remain active in the association.

  • Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that received many hits. This year we have expanded our on-line services extensively including on-line registration services, discussion groups, listservs and even a Maine ASCD Blog. The host services contract has been expanded to allow more bandwidth and the cable modem access in the office was replaced with Verizon DSL. Extrapolated data shows that the Maine ASCD site has had over 227,141 hits since last May with over 45,000 total visitors.

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 15 days of professional development activities around the state (up from 12 days last year) with the following presenters: Gary Marx, Judy Carr, Gayle Gregory, Edie Holcomb and Pam Robbins.

  • The most successful event of the year was the “Education, Technology and the Future of Maine’s Economy” two-day conference held on January 24-25, 2005. With over 400 participants, this conference was a unique collaboration between a number of other organizations as well as the state departments of education, labor and economic and community development. The conference featured presentations by Alan November, Willard Daggett, Marc Tucker and Seymour Papert. In addition, keynote addresses were provided by Governor John Baldacci, Senate President Beth Edmonds, Speaker of the House John Richardson, Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron, Commissioner of Labor Laura Fortman and Commissioner of Economic and Community Development Jack Cashman. Participants came from all corners of the state and included legislators, educators, business and community leaders, as well as state policy makers.

  • Maine ASCD, in cooperation with ASCD offered it first Author’s Forum on the evening of November 3, 2004 in Portland. Stephen L. Wessler, the Director of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence at the University of Southern Maine was the guest speaker and presented information about his book “The Respectful School: How Educators and Students Can Conquer Hate and Harassment” published by ASCD. .

  • In August 2004, Maine ASCD also co-sponsored, along with the Maine Department of Education a week-long Gifted & Talented Summer Institute held in Portland. The keynote speakers were Carol Ann Tomlinson and Carolyn Callahan in the program entitled, “Meeting Different Instructional Needs of All Student.”

  • Also last summer, Maine ASCD cooperated in a partnership with Maine School Union #132 in offering a three day program entitled, “Designing and Delivering Effective Instruction.” This program was designed to assist educational staff and support staff in designing effective instruction using a framework which organizes the research on cognition into a comprehensive model. The faculty for the program were Elaine Nutter and Bea McGarvey.

  • Maine ASCD continued to cultivate the two new professional development services started last year: Study Groups and Showcasing Schools. In all, five Study Groups were offered and six showcased school visitations arranged.

  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 8th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference “Leading and Learning: Designs for Student Success” in Boston Dec 2-3-4, 2004. With approximately 300 attendees (down from 450 last year) including 80 from Maine (down from 158 last year) the program was a success. Maine ASCD continues to serve as the fiscal agent for this conference as well as providing operational support. Speakers this year included, Larry Bell, Barrie Bennett, Debra Pickering and Susan Villani. Next year’s event will feature the return of Rick & Becky DuFour discussing Professional Learning Communities and Michael Fullan speaking on leadership.

  • The Program Committee has continued its work to expand and refine the view of Maine ASCD professional development services offered to educators.

  • The annual ASCD Affiliate Leadership Conference which is normally held in April did not take place this year. ASCD has elected to revise this program calling it the Leadership for Effective Advocacy and Practice Institute (LEAP) and holding it in September.

  • Nearly 80 Mainers, including a number of Maine ASCD Board members attend the 3-day ASCD Annual Conference held in Orlando, FL in March.

  • Maine ASCD has continued building networks with other groups and organizations in Maine. This past year we continued our collaboration with other educational non-profit organizations known collectively as “SuperEd.”

  • A number of networking opportunities have been successful this past year including partnerships with: Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), School Union #132, Portland School Department, Maine School Administrative District #22 (Hampden), Windham School Department, Sanford School Department, Maine School Administrative District # 46 (Dexter), School Union 29, Maine School Administrative District # 75, and the Maine Department of Education.   • The Maine ASCD Board welcomed five new members this year Tom Lafavore, Michele Janes, Frank Boynton, Sally Loughlin, and Steve Marquis and welcomed back Kit Juniewicz for another term. Deputy Commissioner of Education Patrick Phillips has continued on the Board of Directors serving as the liaison to the Department of Education. The Board functioned with one open seat during most of the year after the resignation of Joe Mattos.

  • The Board again held two mini-retreats this year, one last summer which was held at the Maple Hill Farm Inn and the second held at the St. Paul Center in Augusta.

  • Maine ASCD published Volume XXII of the Journal of Maine Education with the theme “Opening Doors - Closing Doors: What Are We Preparing Students For?” This year the Maine ASCD News continued to be published on-line with three issues published thus far this year.

  • The Maine ASCD Weblog was inaugurated this year with 46 entries written by Executive Director John Brandt. Stats show a steady increase in traffic on the site with many referrals coming from the ASCD Annual Conference Blog. Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that receives many hits. Data shows that the Maine ASCD site has had over 557,000 hits since last May with over 106,000 total visitors, more than double the numbers from last year.

  • Maine ASCD introduced its own on-line distance learning program this year with the inauguration of the first Moodle course. Moodle is an open source, web application that creates an on-line learning environment with many features. The application was installed, designed and administered by Executive Director John Brandt and John also organized and mentored the first course called Accessible Web Design which was offered in partnership with Maine CITE. Seven people signed up for the first class in March. The Moodle site is currently open to support members wishing to discuss Professional Learning Communities and can be used to support all other professional development offerings.

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 12 days of professional development workshops/conferences around the state (down from 15 days last year) with the following presenters: Bea McGarvey, Ted Hershberg, Gayle Gregory, and Pam Robbins. In all, 0 days were cancelled (a decrease from 2 last year). Two events, Gayle Gregory and Pam Robbins sold out. In August 2005, Maine ASCD co-sponsored, along with the Maine Department of Education, a week-long Gifted & Talented Summer Institute held in Portland. The featured speaker was Jay McTighe

  • Maine ASCD held one Study Group this year.The Showcasing Schools program has been on hold this year

  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 9th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference “Leading and Learning: Deep and Lasting Improvement” in Boston Dec 1, 2, 3, 2005. With 730 attendees this may have been the largest NEAC ever. With 158 participants from Maine (up from 80 last year), the program was a success. Maine ASCD continues to serve as the fiscal agent for this conference as well as providing operational support. Speakers this year included, Rick & Becky DuFour, Michael Fullan, and Karen Tankersley. Next year’s event will feature Bob Marzano, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Jay McTighe and Brian McNulty as featured speakers and Richard Elmore and Carol Ann Tomlinson as keynotes.

  • The Program Committee has continued its work to expand and refine the view of Maine ASCD professional development services offered to educators.

  • The 1st ASCD LEAP Institute was held in Washington DC on Sept 17-20, 2005 with Elaine Nutter, Carol Marcotte and John Brandt in attendance. As part of the event, Elaine and Carol visited with the staff of Senator Susan Collins sharing ideas, materials and concerns about NCLB.

  • Nearly 60 Mainers attend the 3-day ASCD Annual Conference held in Chicago in March.

  • Maine ASCD exhibited at the MEGAT conference and MPA spring conference this year and sold books and materials.

  • A number of networking opportunities have been successful this past year including partnerships with: Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), Portland School Department, Maine School Administrative District # 75, and the Maine Department of Education.

  • The Maine ASCD Board welcomed four new members this year Donna Tardif, Carol Hathorne, Eunice Bentley, and Deborah McAfee. Deputy Commissioner of Education Angela Faherty has replaced Patrick Phillips serving as the liaison to the Department of Education.

  • The Board again held two mini-retreats this year, one last summer which was held at the University of New England in Biddeford and the second held in January at the St. Paul Center in Augusta. The Board moved to a new meeting schedule changing from 10 meetings per year to six. The meetings induced four half-day meetings and two retreats. During the year the Board approved the formation of the Maine ASCD Networks with the first Network likely being that of literacy leaders. Three goals areas (Programs, Governance and Communication) were set for the year and meetings revolved around those three initiatives. The Communications Committee’s goal was: Maine ASCD will develop and utilize communication system among educational stakeholders and policymakers regarding issues and actions that affect the learning and teaching of the whole child. The Program Committee’s goal was: To further customize our program offerings by differentiating content in order to meet the needs of different members of our audience in support of students. The Governance Committee’s goal was: Leadership/Governance will continue to refine the organizational structure of the Board and work on a revision of the Leadership Handbook. The Governance committee also oversees the nominations/elections process and looks at board development (feeding and nurturing).

  • A new association, the Maine Curriculum Leaders Association took shape this year and Maine ASCD served as their fiscal agent. It is hoped that the two associations can work closely together in the years ahead.

  • Two large scale political issues affected education in Maine this year. In the fall, Maine ASCD took a position in opposition to a citizen initiative called the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR). The initiative did not pass in the general elections in November. In January, Governor Baldacci announced a proposal to consolidate school districts in Maine reducing the number of districts from approximately 150 to 26. The proposal drew a great deal of scorn from some educators; however the plan has continued to move the Legislature. A final vote is expected some time in the next few weeks. Maine ASCD did not take a formal position on the proposal but has followed the action closely and provided many resources for members through daily entries in the Maine ASCD Blog.

  • Maine ASCD published Volume XXIII of the Journal of Maine Education with the theme “Who Decides—or Should Decide—What Schools and Students Should do?” This year the Maine ASCD News continued to be published on-line with five issues published thus far this year. The Maine ASCD News and all of our conferences this year were supported by Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA).

  • The Maine ASCD Weblog was extremely busy this year with 87 entries written by Executive Director John Brandt. Stats show a steady increase in traffic on the site with many referrals coming from the ASCD Annual Conference Blog. Maine ASCD continues to support a high quality web site that receives many hits. Data shows that the Maine ASCD site has had over 640,220 hits since last May with over 138,483 total visitors, 32,000 more than last year. The busiest months this year were December, January and February. The Leadership Team has been experimenting with having virtual meetings using a Voice over IP web-based conference system.

  • Maine ASCD sponsored or co-sponsored 12 days of professional development workshops/conferences around the state (the same as last year) with the following presenters: Gayle Gregory, Pam Robbins, Carl Glickman, and Frank Serafini. In all, 3 days were cancelled (an increase of 3 over last year). One of these events was an encore of the Future of Maine’s Economy Conference, again co-sponsored with the Maine Departments of Education, Labor and Economic and Community Development. Speakers included Governor John Baldacci, Commissioner of Labor Laura Fortman, Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron, Commissioner of Economic & Community Development Jack Cashman, Peter Bellis, Denise Bissonnette, Samuel Leiken, Carl Van Horn and Bruce Schwab.

  • Maine ASCD held one Study Group this year with two sessions. The Leadership in Literacy study groups were held in Gorham with Eunice Bentley facilitating, and in Biddeford with Mary Bellavance facilitating. Two Dine and Discuss events are scheduled for May, one is on Professional Learning Communities at the Saco Middle School and the second will be follow-up sessions to the Spring Conference on The Reading Workshop.

  • Maine ASCD co-sponsored the 10th Annual Northeast ASCD Affiliate Conference (NEAC) “Leading and Learning: Reaching Each Learner” in Boston November 30 and Dec 1, 2, 2006. With 730 attendees (the same as last year) the event was again a sell out. Participation included 166 people from Maine (up from 158 last year). Maine ASCD continues to serve as the fiscal agent for this conference as well as providing operational support. Speakers this year included, Bob Marzano, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Jay McTighe and Brian McNulty as featured speakers and Richard Elmore and Carol Ann Tomlinson as keynotes. Next year’s NEAC will include the following speakers: Rich & Becky DuFour, Pam Robbins, Mike Schmoker, Willard Daggett, Chris Dede, Doug Reeves, Andy Platt & Carolyn Tripp, and Nancy Love & Susan Mundry

  • The Program Committee has continued its work to expand and refine the view of Maine ASCD professional development services offered to educators. The program schedule for 2007-2008 will include a presentations on October 9 by Peter Lancia called “Leadership in Literacy: Developing a School-Wide Partnership, a presentation on October 22 by John D’Auria and Matt King entitled “Transforming Learning Communities,” a two-day presentation on “What Works in Schools by Bea McGarvey on February 8-9, and Pam Robbins will be returning in spring 2008 to present “Peer Coaching: Professional Collaboration That Works!”

  • Maine ASCD’s lease for office space came to an end in June 2006 but we were able to move the files, storage and some equipment into a smaller space in the same building. John Brandt is now working out a small space in his apartment and the association will need to find funding to get a larger office space.

  • The 2nd ASCD LEAP Institute was held in Washington DC September with Rick Lyons and Carol Marcotte in attendance. As part of the event, Carol and Rick visited with the Maine Congressional delegation sharing ideas, materials and concerns.

  • 27 Mainers attend the 3-day ASCD Annual Conference held in Anaheim, CA in March (down from 60 last year). The Annual Conference will be held in New Orleans March 15-17, 2008.

  • Book sales continue to be potentially a good source of revenue for the association; however total sales are down significantly from last year due in part to a lack of space and fewer events where books could be sold.

  • A number of networking opportunities have been successful this past year including partnerships with: Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), Maine School Administrative District # 75, the Maine Departments of Education, Economic & Community Development and Labor, the KIDS Consortium, the Maine Citizen’s Education Task Force. We are looking to collaborate with the Maine Support Network and the Maine Math and Science Alliance next year.

Notable Events

* Maine ASCD's Board of Directrors voted to administer the organization without an Executive Director or bookkeeper.

* The Board of Directors traveled to ASCD Headquarters and worked with Molly McClasky and the ASCD staff to help us develop a strategic plan.

* The Strategic Plan involved four goals: 1) Shape policies which are aligned with ASCD; 2) Expand Maine ASCD's financial capacity; 3) Grow and engage Maine's diverse comunity; and 4) Advance ASCD's Whole Child initiative

* The fall conference, Demystefying Response to Intervention, engaged over 150 educators from around the state in a conversation about RTI and featured Judy True and local practitioners sharing best practices.

* The Maine Literacy Leaders Network sponsored a study group as a follow up, What Really Matters in Response to Intervention by Richard Allington.

* The 11th annual NEASCD Conference in Boston involved about 100 Maine educators in an outstanding conference.

* A mid-year budget curtailment affected the amount of funds local schools could spend on professional learning.

* The spring conference featured Penny Kittle and focused on writing strategies for High Schoolers. Penny was a last minute replavcement for Ellin Keene, and was outstanding.

Notable Events

 

* 3 Affiliate Leaders traveled to Virginia for ASCD's Leader 2 Leader conference.

* Our president and past presuident traveled to Washington, DC for the annual LEAP institute and met with Sen. Susan Collins, Rep. Chellie Pingree, and a representative of Sen. Olympia Snowe to advocate for Maine schools and ASCD's position

* The fall conference, For the Love of Reading, was cancelled because of low enrollment, a symptom of the economy and curtailed professional development funding.

* 60 Mainers attended the annual NEASCD conference in Boston.

* Maine ASCD institured a bi-monthly electronic newsletter, Maine ASCD News, that contained information about upcoming events, reports on past events, and articles on important current events.

*Maine ASCD published the 25th anniversary issue of its Journal of Maine Education
